More Optimism for the Jobs Market

National Association of Manufacturers annual survey showed that 93 percent of manufacturers had a positive outlook of the future of their industry. This is a 20-year record high and a significant increase from 56 percent in the previous year. The survey includes 13,000 manufacturing members of the association.

This optimism could create a surge of jobs in the economy as the year progresses.

Home Sales on the Rise – Another Good Sign for the Jobs Market

The National Association of Realtors released their latest pending home sales index. The results were much better than what most had assumed it would be. This index tracks the contract signings for the purchase of a previously owned home and the index was up by 5.5%. This is the highest level reached since April of 2014 and the second highest level seen since May of 2006.

This can be interpreted as yet another positive sign in the economy. As a general rule, as the economy improves, so does the jobs market.

Consumer Confidence on the Rise

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® shows that consumer confidence rose sharply in March. Consumer confidence is at a level not seen in 16 years – hitting 125.6 after a reading of 116.1 last month.

The Consumer Confidence Survey® reflects prevailing business conditions and likely developments for the months ahead. This monthly report details consumer attitudes and buying intentions.

A positive attitude by consumers translates well for businesses. That, in turn, can have a positive impact on the job market.

JOLTS report by Bureau of Labor Statistics shows higher “quit” rate

The latest JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics) report showed that the quit rate has risen to around 2.2%. This quit rate is higher than it has been in several years.

One interpretation is this is good jobs news. Employees are comfortable with new job prospects to quit their current employment and pursue or accept new employment.
